Melis Varkal (born in 1984, Turkey) holds a Bachelor degree in Architecture from Middle East Technical University, Ankara; with one-year educational experience in Universitat Politécnica de Valencia. After her undergraduate studies, she attended a postgraduate diploma program on Eco-efficient Housing Design in Univeristat Pompeu Fabra (ELISAVA), Barcelona, where she worked on rehabilitation of neighborhoods in particular on resource efficiency and won a competition with the graduation work.
She did her M.Sc. at Institute for Housing and Urban Studies in Urban Management and Development, and her research interests have been sustainable buildings, sustainable neighborhoods, urban transformations, community building and community participation in management and design.
She has more than 4 years of experience in several architectural firms in Turkey as architect, and more than 4 years of experience in NGOs about project management in Turkey and Spain including Architects without Borders, Catalonia.
Melis Varkal currently works as a freelance researcher and architect in the field and teaches part-time in the Department of Architecture at Izmir University of Economics.
