Aydin Akan was born on January 1967, in Bursa, Turkey. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Uludag, Bursa, in 1988, the M.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Program from the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, in 1996.
He has been with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Istanbul University between 1996 and 2017, where he was granted Associate Professor position in 2001, and Professor position in 2006 . He was appointed as Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering between March 2017 and January 2020, where he served as the Dean of School of Engineering and Architecture, BAP Coordinator, Director of Biomedical Test and Calibration R&D Center at Izmir Katip Celebi University, Izmir, Turkey. Currently he holds a Professor position at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Izmir University of Economics where he serves as the Department Chair.
His current research interests include nonstationary signal processing, time-frequency signal analysis, and machine learning methods and their applications to wireless communications and biomedical engineering problems.
He is a senior member of the IEEE Signal Processing (SP) and Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) Societies, and member of European Signal Processing Association (EURASIP), Biomedical Image and Signal Analytics (BISA) Technical Area Committee. He serves as an Associate Editor of the Elsevier Digital Signal Processing Journal.
