After receiving an undergraduate degree in City and Regional Planning from the Middle East Technical University in 1998, he completed a master’s degree in Urban Design at the same university with his thesis on the gated communities in Istanbul. He later received a second master’s degree in Architectural History from University College London, Bartlett School of Architecture, with his thesis on theatre architecture in 19th-century London. He completed his Ph.D. in Art History at the University of Toronto in 2104. His Ph.D. dissertation is on the influence of American architecture on postwar Turkish architectural culture. His main research interests include Cold War-era architectural culture, the spatial construction of public memory, the history of emotions, the romantic tradition in architecture, architectural publishing and curation, and architectural imaginaries in the Anthropocene.
He is the inaugural Getty Global Affiliated Fellow at the American Academy in Rome (2023-24).
