Gül Güner-Akdogan is holder of BS and MSc in Biochemistry from Geneva University, Switzerland. After completing her PhD degree in Istanbul University in 1980, she joined the faculty in the biochemistry departments in Istanbul and then, in Izmir (Dokuz Eylül-1986) Universities.
In 1996, she was awarded an ECFMG (USA) fellowship (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) and was invited as a visiting professor to the Department of Biochemistry, WVU-SOM, USA. She was re-invited to the USA medical school for a short-term “revisit” in 2001.
In 2002, Gül Akdogan founded the Central Research Laboratory of Dokuz Eylul Medical School, which she directed between 2002-2016. She also worked promoting the post-graduate education in health sciences and from 2000 to 2010, she was the Director of the Graduate School of Health Sciences responsible for the coordination and management of MSc and PhD degrees. Linked to this role, she served as the coordinator of Dokuz Eylül University on the Doctoral Council of EUA. She served on the Executive Committee of ORPHEUS (Organisation for PhD education for biomedicine and health sciences in the European system) between 2010-2016 and organised the 6th ORPHEUS Conference in Izmir in April, 2011. She was the General Secretary of this organisation between 2014-2016. Since 2017, Gül Akdoğan is the Co-Chair of the Labeling Committee of ORPHEUS.
Gül Güner’s research activity is focused on the extracellular matrix in health and disease and its communication with cells including fibroblasts, and lately, endothelial cells. She has over 95 publications on her research, cited in SCI, extended SCI, Index Medicus, etc.
In 2001, Gül was invited to join the FEBS (Federation of European Biochemical Societies) Working Group on Teaching Biochemistry and from 2008 , was elected to be a member of the FEBS Education Committee founded by late Prof. Edward Wood (Leeds). Gül Güner (Akdogan) organised, coordinated, or served as a trainer in over sixty workshops, symposia, and meetings mostly including FEBS, IUBMB, etc. She worked on the Editorial Board of BAMBED (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education Journal) between 2007-2015 and served on the Editorial Board of “Bioscience Education”.
Between 2009-2019 Gül Akdoğan servet as Chair of FEBS Education Committee (Elected in Prague in 2009, re-elected for a second term during FEBS Council in September 2012, and a third term during the FEBS Council in Berlin in July 2015). She totated out from Chairship in 2019. Prof. Gül Güner AKDOĞAN was awarded the "FEBS Diplome d'Honneur" in 2018.
Gül Güner Akdogan served as the Director of Graduate School of Health Sciences of IEU between 2016-2019. Since 2016, she is a faculty member of the Basic Sciences division of IEU School of Medicine.
