Born in 1982, Özgür Demirci completed his MA degree in C:Art:Media (Fri Konst) at the Valand Academy of Fine Arts, Sweden, after his undergraduate studies at the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts, Faculty of Art and Design, Yıldız Technical University. In 2022, he earned his proficiency in arts program at Dokuz Eylül University Fine Arts Faculty Art and Design department. He worked on violence and crime adaptations in contemporary art in his thesis and especially his recent works. Demirci’s interest on these notions extend over to the ARCUS Project where he was an artist in residence in Japan, in 2012.
Demirci records the tangible and intangible things which are almost disappearing, just like defence mechanism developed against the fragility of memory. He tries to preserve memory with his works by looking at current testimony and sometimes he uses ready-made object from the past with together his memory. One of his video work about an old movie theatre which lose its function but not transformed into another structure yet is awarded the O’art prize in 2016. The video that notably shown at the 36 th Istanbul Film Festival, 8 th Makedox Film Festival has shown in several cities. In 2016, he went to New York as a guest artist for Residency Unlimited and produced a video installation about the disappearing languages.
