Prior to teaching Ralph Berney was self employed as a freelance journalist working in the Balkan region of southern Europe covering political and social affairs. In 1998, he acquired a CELTA qualification. Between 2000 and 2003, he taught English in two Turkish high schools. In 2003-4 taught business English (BEC orientated syllabus) to staff in a Turkish company. Since 2004, he has taught English at Izmir University of Economics, in Prep. School (one year), the last seven years teaching in the Freshmen programme, a skills based course. Also, he has taught an advanced exam preparation course (elective), a focus on TOEFL (for the last seven years), and the ENG 103/104 course, international exam preparation (focus on TOEFL and IELTS) to Dual Diploma students, for the last two years. Since 2000, he has been an IELTS examiner, and also an examiner for junior Cambridge external exams.
